Despite their abundance in global oceans and potential ecological significance, discovered in recent years, neither nuclear nor organellar genomes of representatives of this group were sequenced until now. WebOne of them, the amoeboid alga Rhizochromulina marina, belongs to the taxon Dictyochophyceae, which also includes silicoflagellates that create siliceous skeletons but is not known to produce biosilica. The colepid ciliate Tiarina fusa, a protozoan that creates a calcium carbonate shell, contains the other non-diatom homologue of Sin1.
